First off, this is one of the better books on this subject, both for its style, breadth, tone and research. Congratulations to the author on a job well done.The major deficiency for me is that there are clear contradictions in the subject matter that are simply advanced with no explanation as to the contradiction. For example, if THC "tickles" the amygdala resulting in increased magnitude of the amygdala's standard functions (hunger, novelty, etc.), why does it not act the same way in the hippocampus, where it degrades memory?Chapter 3 on down-regulation is especially guilty of this kind of glossing over. If, as described in chapter 2, the endocannabinoid system inhibits the flow of neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, then why one earth would a cannabinoid deficient state described in chapter 3, p. 31, result in "the whole panoply of neurotransmitters that had been limited by THC's stimulation of the negative feedback loop is now released in greater abundance." WHAT?! You just spent the whole last chapter telling us THC increases neurotransmitter flow, now you are telling me they are "limited by THC's stimulation of the negative feedback loop"? This makes no sense, and its actually just one example of many.I had to sit down and spend much time trying to figure this out and I still cannot make sense of this assertion and many others just like it. I don't know if this was an error or just a failure to simply say up front that we just don't know the full picture of how this chemical works.Also, and I know this is not the author's fault, but the binding is terrible on this book. Yes, yes, I know. This has nothing to do with the content, but having whole chunks of the book fall out does effect the experience. And frankly, Cambridge University press has been in the business too long to allow this shoddy work.
